Photo of the Week

My pick for photo of the week. Past weeks' picks will remain for up to a year. I update this every once in awhile, so it will not be exactly weekly, but will be more than monthly - at least that is the plan.

Ice Age Floods

Around 13,000 years ago, Lake Missoula was one of the largest freshwater lakes in the history of the world. It was formed by glaciers plugging the outlet of what is now Lake Pend Oreille in Northern Idaho. When the water got deep enough, the ice floated and the dam burst. It might have been the biggest flood in the earth's history.

Lake Pend Oreille (a very very large lake) is the tiny remnant of what is referred to as Lake Missoula (the lake was 900 feet deep at Missoula, which was 160 miles upstream).

The water volume discharge rate is estimated as 200 times the maximum ever measured flood volume of the Mississippi River and 750 times the average discharge of the Amazon River!

The photos in this gallery are of land affected by the lake and the floods. I hope you enjoy viewing them.

Hummingbirds on Marrowstone

I had the good fortune to visit an incredibly active hummingbird feeder. These are all shots taken when the hummingbird backed away from the feeder. In some cases, the feeder has been removed to eliminate the distraction.

I have made my best guess on females versus sub-adult males. If you know better, please leave a comment.

At one point, while I was looking through the lens, I felt something brushing my hand (which was at my side). I looked down to see a little hummer about 6 inches from my hand. It had clearly come all the way to my hand and brushed me with its wings. Really a neat experience.

Coulees in Washington state

Photo gallery from 3 day visit to the Grand Coulee (Upper and Lower) and Moses Coulee (10 miles west of Grand Coulee).

This is a companion gallery to the Ice Age Floods gallery.

Moses Coulee was the first of the two coulees formed by outflow from ancient Lake Columbia (into which the Lake Missoula floods emptied). It was used only for a short while (geologically speaking) before an ice lobe sealed it. Then the Grand Coulee was used for a longer while.

It has been 13,000 years since water flowed through Grand Coulee and even longer since it flowed through Moses Coulee. Neither coulee has a river or stream running through it now.

It is really fun to let your imagination go here. Imagine a flood so big that Grand Coulee overflowed - by a lot, not just a little - to the tune of several hundred feet over the top for miles and miles in width (hundreds of miles if my reading is accurate).

John Day region in North-central Oregon includes the John Day Painted Hills. The hills are colored clay from lava flows 30 to 40 million years ago. The clay is so dense it is completely unhospitable to plants and thus is bare.

The initial photos are from a visit in late May of 2010. This was during an unusually wet period. During wet periods, the clay color intensifies and a few grasses and plants show color.

The wind farm is around the Columbia River gorge south to Condon Oregon.

Photos from insects and bugs and small flying things.

These photos became possible with the addition of a Canon 70-200 F2.8 lens. I use an extender (2X) and extension tubes to get close to small creatures.
